On 1/10/2008 the US Food and Drug Administration sent letters warning seven pharmacy operations that the claims they make about the safety and effectiveness of their so-called "bio-identical hormone replacement therapy," or "BHRT" products are unsupported by medical evidence, and are considered false and misleading by the agency. The FDA is concerned that unfounded claims like these mislead women and healthcare professionals.




A large government-sponsored study of cardiovascular risk factors in women taking various estrogen/progestin replacement regimens was published in the Journal of American Medical Association. Referred to as the PEPI Trial, it confirmed the fact that synthetic progestins partially negate the beneficial effects on cholesterol levels that result from taking estrogen. Natural Progesterone, on the other hand, maintains all the benefits of estrogen on cholesterol without any side-effects associated with synthetic progestins (such as fluid retention, irritability and depression).
